It didn’t take me long to fall in love with Kefalonia, one of the beautiful Ionian Greek islands.
Just a 3 and a half hour flight from London and you will arrive to the sun shining brightly and the warmth of the local Greek residents.
Ionian & Aegean island Holidays include all transfers to your accommodation, whether a hotel, apartment or villa. If you would like to explore the island at your own pace car hire will be delivered to your accommodation for the duration of your stay.
I very quickly learnt that Ionian go above and beyond your client’s expectations. As an example, if you find yourself with an unexpected toothache, a dentist will soon be sourced for you. It’s obvious why they have so many repeat clients, their reputation surpasses any clients needs every time.
A visit to Argostili is a must! being the capital it’s perfect for a day trip or an overnight stay. Only 3 km away from the nearest beach, boasting a charming marina where you may spot a turtle or 2.
Argostili is a bustling authentic Greek town where the main square is full of life and the locals frequent.
There are a choice of restaurants serving the traditional Greek cuisine and if the locals love it – it’s a sure sign Argostili is worth a visit.
Argostili was rebuilt due to an earthquake in the fifties. It is steeped in history and the perfect spot to wine and dine and take in the atmosphere or walk around and enjoy the local history.
Assos – A picturesque village which has retained a traditional Greek charm, the perfect place to switch off and really enjoy a relaxing holiday.
Take a walk along the pastel-coloured houses lined with Bougainvillea growing around the doors.
It is a small, secluded resort, nestled in a horseshoe shaped harbour jutting out onto a peninsula. You can take a small boat to go fishing and enjoy the handful of bars and restaurants to while away your time.
Assos has 2 small shingle beaches.
Not every accommodation have pools due to the local building regulations and the small selection are just a stones throw from the beach.
Take advantage of a villa set in the Assos hills where the sea views are spectacular with a 10 minute stroll down to the beach but a slightly harder uphill climb on the way back!
Fiskado – Often referred to as a chic resort known for visiting yachts and waterfront restaurants. Zavalata beach is a small and pebbly beach just a 3-minute walk from the harbourside. It is a slightly more expensive side of the island to stay and dine out in but the views from the selection of apartments are well worth it. Dine in one of the many harbour restaurants, often family run, eating under the stars watching the visitors stroll by, does put you into the holiday vibe.
You can hire a boat to visit the surrounding coves or a bike to explore the coastline, taking a break in a local coffee shop to enjoy the taste of the Greek Baclava.
Myrtos Beach – This has got to be one of the most breath-taking views on the island. This stunning beach is surrounded by tall marble cliffs and a steep and winding road will take you there to enjoy the warm calm turquoise sea. It is a must to spend an hour or two on this beautiful beach and image the scene from the famous film Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.
Melissani Caves – Situated just outside Sami, the Melissani Caves is one of the most significant places for tourists to visit in Greece. Surprisingly, a lake lies inside the cave, with trees and forests surrounding it. The cave is B-shaped, with two chambers or halls separated by an island in the centre. The first chamber is sun-lit while the second is dark and has many stalactites covered with algae and moss. You can take in the somewhat eerie atmosphere on a large rowing boat, and if you are lucky like we were, the Paddler will serenade you around the caves!
Ithaca – Take a boat from the harbour in Fiskado and arrive onto the neighbouring island of Ithaca within 40 minutes. You cross the turquoise Ionian Sea, and maybe see a turtle popping it’s head up to greet you!
Ithaca is surrounded by natural beauty with lush green nature and plenty of waterfalls and the beaches are a mixture of fine shingle, pebble and sand.
Visit Kioni, an authentic fishing village with spectacular views and while away the time and enjoy the scenery from one of the traditional Greek tavernas. There are few apartments with the real Greek feel.
Vathy, the Capital of Ithaca often described as having ‘a view resembling a painting’. You can walk from one side of Vathy to the other, with sloping hills it’s a great place for hiking with the centre itself boasting many traditional tavernas and fish restaurants. Vathy remains incredibly unspoilt with lemon tress full to the brim.
Frikes -a lovely harbour and one of the best beaches boasting a sandy coast. Al fresco dining watching the world go by. Frikes offers nice taverns and shops lining the waterfront and an outdoor night club which opens only during summer with live music, food and great music to dance all night. One of the most interesting sights in Frikes are the traditional windmills that stand on top of the village.
MOUSSAKA – A meat dish cooked with mince, aubergines and bechamel sauce
STIFADO – Rabbit or beef cooked with shallots in tomato sauce.
GIGANTES – Butter beans cooked with carrots & celery in tomato sauce
